Workshop Landscape Measures: when landscape is addressed comprehensively

On Thursday, 3 April 2025, we met with more than fifty participants in Malé Žernosky - from mayors and representatives of the Ústí Region to experts and others who care about the landscape. The aim was to acquaint the participants with the scope of the implemented project and to show that the implementation of adaptation measures in the landscape is possible, although not always easy. The tools for solutions exist and by using a complex process that requires cooperation, understanding and often a good deal of patience, we can protect our landscape from negative impacts.

The morning belonged to the research team, who presented their plans within the RUR project and some of the implementations that have already taken place. They talked about spatial planning, land management, land reclamation, landscape measures or how it is possible to use the tools of DPZ and big data to monitor what is happening in the landscape and to evaluate it and then use it in practice.

We have tried to answer the question that many municipalities ask themselves, ‘How do we make sense of it all?’

The afternoon part of the meeting was devoted to the search for answers. The roundtables sparked a discussion about why some projects are difficult to implement, what is holding back their approval, where the authorities come in, but also the limits of time and capacity. The implementation of landscape measures is not a sprint, but rather a marathon with obstacles - and without a quality team it simply cannot be done.

Why did we choose Malé Žernoseky for our initial meeting? Not only is it beautiful, but it is one of the model research sites. So after lunch we swapped the conference room for the field and went on a field trip. We were shown on the spot what the planned polder looks like and what the real possibilities of its implementation are.

The whole day was in the spirit of cooperation and open exchange of experience. And in the end, we all took away a clear message: 'Fortune favours the prepared (municipalities).'
Thank you for being there. Your experiences, questions and ideas will help us to further fine-tune how science can help (not only) municipalities in the Ústí nad Labem region.

We look forward to continuing this at a future workshop, where we plan to present further advances and possibilities tested in the project at specific pilot sites in the Ústí nad Labem Region. For the time being, you can see the attached presentation and if you are interested in anything, please do not hesitate to contact us!
